We highlight why IBM’s System z10™ won market share, added new customer sites, grabbed new workloads, and multiplied installed capacity many-fold this decade, whilst HPINS declined. This new ESSR assesses these high-end platforms, their MPU technologies, and software stacks. Our research found the case for this exotic platform has now evaporated, and the time for its users to migrate off is now near or here. HPINS high-availability, fault-tolerant qualities (long their main raison de être) were provided by their fault-tolerant software, sometimes complemented by costly, redundant special hardware, and long sold at premium prices. ![]() But HP saw far less success with its enterprise systems (Business Critical Systems – BCS). ![]() In such high-volume, standard products-focused, and price-driven IT segments, consumer and Small to Medium Business (SMB) end-markets dominate. But can customers trust HP’s real commitment to, and strategy for, enterprise systems, and specifically for HP Integrity NonStop? Is that the same HP who betrayed thousands of loyal server customers when it killed off all four prior HP RISC platforms in the last five years? Are those the same IBM System z10™ mainframes HP is attacking that >doubled their high-end server revenue share from 17% to 37% from 2000 to 2008, huge gains? Is that the same HPINS whose revenue collapsed >three-fold from a peak ~$2.3B (1995-actual) to just ~$650M (2009-our estimate)? ® ® Aren’t Integrity NonStop servers now powered by the Intel Itanium MPUs that a leading IT commentator recently described as: “…one of the great fiascos of the last 50 years.” HP won real success and share leadership in PCs/notebooks, printers/imaging, and in Industry Standard Servers (ISSs) in recent years. These are its standard HP Integrity UNIX, and specialist HPINS faulttolerant, platforms (this ESSR’s focus). Why such aggressive, derogatory HP attacks on IBM’s resurgent System z10™? Why such fierce, renewed promotion of the HP Integrity NonStop (HPINS) platform now? What are the relative competitive positions of these two high-end enterprise platforms today? Against today’s IBM System z10™, HP today pushes two enterprise platforms with similar names but totally different architectures, powered by market-lagging Intel® Itanium® Microprocessor Units (MPUs). Since Q4 2008, HP repeatedly attacked IBM System z™ with hostile press releases, critical Web page claims, and fierce conference talks, etc. ![]() Additional Notes: If you have a potato PC or above, you’re ok.Enterprise Server Spotlight Review Declining HP Integrity NonStop Far Outclassed by IBM System z10™ Mainframe About this Enterprise Server Spotlight Review This new Enterprise Server Spotlight Review (ESSR) assesses/compares IBM’s successful System z10™ mainframes against competitor Hewlett-Packard’s (HP’s) niche Integrity NonStop platform, heir to the Tandem Computer’s fault-tolerant legacy via Compaq.Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 280X / GeForce GTX 760.Battle through a demon-infested castle and defeat its master to save yourself, and all of humanity!
