These explanatory theories were based on a scientific approach that tried to simplify, reduce and fragment reality into smaller components that were easier to understand and that helped to predict outcomes based on linear causal relations ( Green & McDermott, 2010). In social work practice, many professionals relied heavily on the general systems theory (GST) and the ecosystems perspective ( Green & McDermott, 2010 Healy, 2005). Social work drew from explanatory theories provided by various disciplines not only to understand complex realities and interactions and predict outcomes, but also to gain scientific credibility. Although social work did not specifically designate problems as complex at that time, there was an interest in developing a broader understanding of the complexity of situations encountered in practice and their structural dimensions by considering the person in its environment. Some attempts to understand complex problem solving were initiated in the 1970s, both in Europe and North America, especially in natural knowledge domains such as physics, and in other fields that address, for example, personal problem-solving or political decision-making ( Funke & Frensch, 1995). The necessity to address real-life, complex problems is not a recent topic in social sciences.
